Is your dryer not spinning anymore?

We recommend a professional diagnosis but will go over some ways you could potentially troubleshoot the issue on your own. Thankfully, this issue is one of the few problems that often does not require a multimeter to make an accurate diagnosis.

A dryer will stop spinning if the dryer belt snaps. It's possible for this to happen simply because of wear and tear to the belt over time. Running heavy loads regularly can also increase the risk of the belt snapping prematurely. The best way to tell if this part needs to be replaced is by attempting to spin the dryer by hand. If there's no resistance, that's your problem.

Another possible reason for a dryer to stop spinning is because a drum roller (or both) has become faulty. Just like the belt, the rollers are susceptible to wear and tear. To diagnose, take the dryer belt out of your machine and see if you can get the inside to spin with ease. If there's resistance still, inspect the rollers for damage.

Any roller that does not spin without resistance will need to be replaced. For best results, replace all rollers when completing this kind of dryer repair. You must also check to see if the axles need to be replaced if the rollers are damaged.

Other possible parts that could directly or indirectly cause a dryer to stop spinning include: the drum bearing, glides drive motor and control board - which powers off the dryer when it thinks the load is done, effectively stopping it from spinning. Please note: if the motor or control board are to blame you will need a multimeter to make that determination.

Helpful Appliance Repair Tips

Is your dryer tripping its breaker? If so, assuming its a sudden issue, it is likely because of a failing part in your appliance. For example, when the heating element in your dryer shorts against its assembly it will trigger the circuit to trip. A multimeter can be used to check for proper continuity in the element and assembly. Some other parts that could cause the circuit to trip include the drive motor and terminal block. If your dryer is not to blame then the circuit has simply worn out over time and needs to be replaced by an electrician.
