Is the pilot light on your gas stove not igniting or staying lit?

If nothing happens at all, double check that gas is coming through. There should be a very faint odor. If there's a constant gas leak it should be brought up with the company that supplies your gas. Also, for electric gas stove owners, make sure the pilot electrode is not obstructed in any way.
Another problem could be with the flame sensor. If this sensor is defective it will not believe that the flame is reaching high enough. As a result, your gas stove will only ignite for a very short period (a few seconds) before going out. If this part is defective it will need to be replaced to fix the issue.
Your oven's self-cleaning feature should not be used all the time. It takes a while to perform anyway, but this point is important to note. Self-cleaning requires high temperature levels which often lead to defects in various oven parts, especially the oven door lock switch and assembly. By limiting your use of the self-cleaning feature you reduce the risk of damage to your oven. When the inside of your oven is very soiled you could run the self-clean cycle. However, for minor spills a manual cleaning by hand will be sufficient.
